Temperature records smashed in the Maritimes Wednesday

A scorching day in May for parts of the Maritime region, but much more seasonable temperatures are in the forecast for Thursday and Friday.

A ridge of heat building over the Maritimes going back to the May long weekend peaked on Wednesday.

Temperatures in the region soared into the high 20s and low 30s. A few areas remained with more moderate temperatures, including some coastal communities and Cape Breton.

High temperature records have been set in all three provinces. Record keeping began in some of the areas going back to the late 1800s and early 1900s.

The weather station at Kejimkujik Park, N.S., reached 32 C for the second consecutive day. At weather stations monitored by Environment Canada, that site was the hottest in the country for both Tuesday and Wednesday.

A cold front crossing the Maritimes Wednesday evening brings a chance of isolated showers and thunderstorms. The front will also change the wind direction, the wind becoming northwest behind it. The northwest wind will draw in cooler air from Hudson Bay down into the region for Thursday.

Daytime highs on Thursday will cool to seasonable or even a touch below, mostly reaching the low-to-mid teens.
