New Brunswick’s police watchdog is investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of a man in Hardwicke last month. The Serious Incident Response Team (SiRT) says the RCMP received a call about noises and concern for a neighbour’s well-being at a residence in the community the night of Aug. 19. “RCMP did not attend the residence that night and made arrangements for the Miramichi Mobile Crisis Unit to respond the following morning,” said SiRT in a statement Thursday. “The following morning the crisis unit requested RCMP officers attend the call with them.” SiRT says the responding RCMP officers found the body of an adult male inside the home. Police contacted SiRT on Aug. 21 and an investigation was launched. No other details were released. According to the Horizon Health Network, Mobile Crisis Units are comprised of addiction and mental health social workers and/or nurses. They respond to people who are experiencing a mental health crisis and require assessment or intervention, and work to defuse situations. SiRT is responsible for investigating all serious incidents involving police in Nova Scotia or New Brunswick, whether or not there is an allegation of wrongdoing.
