More than 21 years after the body of a newborn baby was found dead along a Brantford trail, his mother pleaded guilty in court. The 39-year-old woman was arrested in February and charged with indignity to a body and concealing the body of a child. She plead guilty to only one of those charges on Wednesday, admitting she disposed of her child’s body. The woman cried quietly as she stood next to her lawyer in court. Despite entering a guilty plea, she insisted she had no memory of the crime. History of the case The full-term baby boy was wrapped in a towel and left near Dufferin Avenue and Parkside Drive on July 28, 2005. An autopsy found trauma to the child’s ribs and skull, but the medical examiner could not determine what happened to him. An investigator named him Baby Parker. His mother was not identified until earlier this year. The Brantford Police Service said they used advanced DNA technology to make the match. The mother’s name was never shared publicly due to a publication ban. At the time of Baby Parker’s birth, she would have been approximately 18 years old. Sentencing CTV’s Krista Sharpe-Kilpatrick was in the courtroom for the plea. She said arguments on sentencing will be heard at 2 p.m. “[The mother] should be given credit for the fact that she pleaded guilty,” Justice Wilson noted, then added, “This is a serious offence and we want to make sure that we proceed in the right way.” Lawyers are reviewing case law before making their recommendations.
