The Halifax Pride Festival kicked off Thursday with a free rainbow pancake breakfast. The event, which runs until July 26, celebrates the 2SLGBTQIA+ community. “While Pride Month is recognized in June to commemorate the June 1969 Stonewall Rebellion, Halifax Pride honours a significant event closer to home: the first Pride march in Halifax, held in July 1988,” reads a news release from the Halifax Regional Municipality. “Hosting the festival in July reflects the community’s unique history and origins as a march protesting harassment and discrimination.” The municipality is encouraging residents and visitors to participate in festival events such as a flag raising at Grand Parade, the Halifax Pride Parade, and Exploring Pride Week events at the Halifax Public Libraries.
