Halifax council approves report on improving traffic amid construction

Halifax council has approved Mayor Andy Fillmore’s motion seeking a report and action plan on improving traffic management during construction projects.

The motion, which was brought to council during their Tuesday meeting, seeks to prioritize measures that can be implemented within existing budgets and resources.

The motion was broken into five parts, which council voted separately on. They were:

• temporary changes to parking regulations on major corridors near planned construction projects during peak travel periods (passed unanimously)
• enhanced signage, wayfinding and real-time traveller communications (passed 14-to-one)
• explore the potential use of police officers or other qualified personnel to manage significant construction-related congestion (passed 10-to-five)
• explore options to increase the undertaking of construction projects at night and on weekends (passed unanimously)
• other operational measures identified by staff to improve traffic flow (passed 14-to-one)

The staff report will seek to address each of these requests.
