A Halifax Regional Police (HRP) car collided with a fleeing suspect and crashed into a power pole in the north end of the city Sunday. At approximately 2:30 p.m., police received a theft report from the Quinpool Superstore, said HRP in an email to CTV News Atlantic. The suspect was reported to have left the scene on a bicycle. Two officers driving a patrol vehicle spotted the suspect on Nora Bernard Street a short time later and activated their lights and siren, said HRP. The bicycle turned onto Maynard Street and police collided with the suspect while in pursuit and then struck the power pole, police said. The suspect and an officer were transported to hospital and the second officer was treated by EHS. Police say the suspect, a 37-year-old man, is facing charges of theft under $5,000 and possession of stolen property under $5,000. He will appear in Halifax provincial court at a later date. Several officers were at the scene of the collision Sunday afternoon. Police tape was used to barricade the area surrounding the car. The police car appeared to have a damaged front end.
