IWK Health used a new piece of imaging technology to perform multiple surgeries in April. Surgeons at the hospital used the O-Arm imaging system for the first time in Canada during pediatric spinal surgery, said an IWK news release. The newest version of the equipment combines 3D software with low radiation exposure. Dr. Kevin Morash said the O-Arm ensures the highest standard of patient safety. “An O-Arm allows surgeons to more efficiently place screws during spinal surgery with the utmost precision using a 3D image,” said Morash. Dr. Ben Orlik performed the first surgery with Morash on 14-year-old Molly Johnston, a dancer from Moncton, N.B., whose scoliosis caused increased pain and fatigue in recent years. Her mother Marsha Johnston said they were grateful for the advanced care. “Everyone at IWK consistently made us feel supported, informed, and cared for throughout the entire process,” Marsha said. Dr. Karl Logan used the O-Arm for a pelvic osteotomy less than a week later and became the first person in Canada to use the technology for any non-spinal surgery. “There will be many firsts taking place here at IWK, now that we have this unique equipment,” said Morash. “Our IWK surgeons are really interested in using this 3-D technology for non-spinal surgeries as well, so some of my colleagues have been using the OARM to increase the precision of pelvis surgery, surgery on the growth plates and it’s really interesting to see kind of how this program will grow in the Maritimes,” he added. The O-Arm system wraps around the operating table and provides real-time images of the patient’s anatomy during surgery, allowing surgeons to make adjustments during the procedure, according to the release. It is primarily used for spine, orthopedic and trauma-related surgeries. The equipment was purchased with funds raised through the 2025 Kent Great Big Dig for the IWK.
