Labatt Brewing Company bottles thousands of cans of water for Halifax shelter

A Halifax brewery has turned on its emergency water tap again – to distribute cans of water for those in need.

Labatt Brewing Company has filled thousands of cans of water to help a Halifax shelter.

The Oland Brewery in North Halifax shut down beer production on Sunday to roll out roughly 16,000 cans of water, which will go to Souls Harbour Rescue Mission.

Wade Keller, Atlantic director of corporate affairs for Labatt, said distributing water is part of the company’s disaster relief program.

“We can bottle water and deliver it upon request,” he said. “This program has existed at Labatt since 2012. Since the beginning we’ve donated 1.1 million cans of water to people across Canada.”

Jonathan Rassem with Souls Harbour said they will get the water to people experiencing homelessness around Halifax.

“It’s a pretty significant addition to what we’re doing,” he said. “It helps a lot of people.”

Keller said Labatt is also giving 5,000 cans of water to the Halifax Regional Municipality for people who might have dry wells.

“Having an opportunity to give back to the community is of paramount importance,” he said. “I know everyone in this brewery takes great pride in giving back to the community.”
