Visitors to Argyle Fine Art had the chance to see the creative process behind a painting Saturday as Halifax artist Jack Ross hosted a live demonstration, offering a behind-the-scenes look at how his work comes together. Ross worked from photographic references, many inspired by Halifax’s downtown streets, explaining how he translates everyday scenes into paintings through colour, tone and brushwork. He said live demonstrations help make the artistic process less mysterious for viewers, giving them a better understanding of how a finished piece is created. “I think it’s a really good thing anytime you get a chance to go to either an artist talk or an artist painting demo,” Ross said. “Sometimes we look at a finished piece of artwork and it’s a little mysterious about how it comes about, so it’s nice to get to share a little bit of that process with folks.” Ross, who was born in Nova Scotia’s Annapolis Valley and has spent much of his adult life in Halifax, said walking through the city often serves as inspiration for his paintings. In addition to exhibiting his work, Ross regularly teaches introductory painting and drawing courses through NSCAD University’s Extended Studies Department. He said demonstrations like the one at Argyle Fine Art allow people to learn more about painting techniques while encouraging them to explore their own creativity.
