Pictou County RCMP are investigating multiple reports of copper theft which led to damage to safety-related infrastructure at railway crossings. Police say they responded to reports of damage to equipment at railway crossings in rural parts of Pictou County on June 10, 17 and 22. In a news release on Monday, police say the damage appeared to have been done as part of attempts to steal copper from electrical systems. “Any damage to signage around railway crossings that may impact its functionality is a significant public safety risk,” said the RCMP, adding tampering with any railway equipment is illegal as it can prevent the equipment from properly warning drivers of approaching trains at crossings. Police are asking for anyone with information, including scrap dealers who may have accepted parts that came from the equipment, to contact the RCMP at 902-485-4333, or contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
