Four people – three of them children – had to be rescued from a house fire in Cape Breton over the weekend. The fire at a home on Mt. Pleasant Street in Whitney Pier, N.S., was called in at roughly 3:30 p.m. on Saturday. Fire officials said the home was fully engulfed when crews arrived minutes later. The charred remains of the home were being demolished on Monday. Donald Whalen, a platoon chief with Cape Breton Regional Fire and Emergency, said the adult and three children who were home got out thanks to a dramatic rescue. “We had reports that there were people in the house at the time that were assisted to be extricated by the homeowner, and the report I got was (also by) an off-duty RCMP officer that was in the area,” Whalen said. While the people who were rescued escaped without serious injury, Whalen said three fighters at the scene suffered minor injuries. “One firefighter received minor burns that prevented him from continuing the shift,” Whalen said. “The other two firefighters were able to continue their shift, just little tweaks here and there.” The fire is now under investigation by Cape Breton Regional Police and the Fire Marshal’s Office.
