The Prince Edward Island government launched its Heat Alert and Response System (HARS) Friday. According to a news release from the province, HARS will provide timely information when hot weather is expected on the Island and help ensure all Islanders have the same information and guidance during periods of extreme heat. “Summer is a wonderful time on Prince Edward Island, and we want Islanders to enjoy the PEI summer safely,” said Cory Deagle, minister of Health and Wellness. “This new system helps make sure people and the organizations that support them have clear, consistent information to stay safe during extreme heat.” Hot and humid conditions can increase the risk of heat-related illnesses, especially for those who are most vulnerable, including older adults, young children, people with chronic health conditions and people who work outdoors. The Chief Public Health Office is encouraging Islanders to take simple precautions during the summer months: “We all look forward to summer on Prince Edward Island—it’s a time to get outside and enjoy everything the season has to offer,” said Dr. Heather Morrison, Chief Public Health Officer. “By staying aware of conditions, recognizing early signs of heat-related illness, and taking a few simple precautions, Islanders can protect their health and enjoy the PEI summer safely.” For more P.E.I. news, visit our dedicated provincial page.
