Dartmouth singer-songwriter Mo Kenney’s latest album feels both deeply personal and more collaborative than anything they’ve released before. The album, ‘From Nowhere,’ was recorded in Dartmouth, N.S., at Fang Recording Studio with longtime collaborator Joel Plaskett. The 2025 Music Nova Scotia Songwriter of the year says the record reflects a period of growth and change, both personally and musically. “I got sober like six years ago, so I do find myself writing quite a bit about that,” Kenney said in an interview with CTV Atlantic’s Katie Kelly. “But I don’t think it’s a very dark record. Historically, I’ve written pretty sad songs. There are still some sad ones… but this one feels a bit lighter.” ‘From Nowhere’ also stands out for its local features like Rose Cousins, Victoria Cameron, Siobhan Martin, and Jordan Murphy. “Usually, it’s just Joel and I in the studio,” Kenney said. “So, it was very collaborative in a way that I haven’t really done before.” That sense of community is carrying over to the stage. Kenney heads to New Brunswick on Jan. 23 for the Shivering Songs festival in Fredericton, performing alongside one of their favourite songwriters, Charlotte Cornfield, at Wilmot United Church. Ultimately, Kenney hopes ‘From Nowhere’ invites listeners into a world that feels familiar, welcoming, and real. “My favourite thing about listening to other people’s music is getting pulled into their world a little bit,” Kenney said. “Hopefully you find something you can relate to - that’s what I hope people get from my music.” ‘From Nowhere’ is out now.
