An Ontario Provincial Police officer has been charged with two firearm-related offences after allegedly discharging a firearm during a training exercise earlier this year. Police say the officer was on duty and participating in training when the incident occurred on May 7. According to the OPP Professional Standards Unit, the use of a firearm was neither required nor authorized during the exercise. On Aug. 10, a 34-year-old provincial constable from Gravenhurst was arrested and charged with careless use of a firearm and reckless discharge of a firearm. The officer has served with the OPP for seven years and is a member of the Emergency Response Team, police said. He has been suspended with pay in accordance with Ontario’s Community Safety and Policing Act and is scheduled to appear in court on Oct. 13. The allegations against him have not been tested in court.
