Environment Canada calls for ‘significant rainfall’ across Simcoe County with up to 40 mm expected

Rain, snow, slush and possible flooding in the forecast for the next few days.

It’s time to trade your winter boots for rain boots.

Environment Canada says a stretch of heavy rainfall could move in late Tuesday night and last through Wednesday, with 20 to 40 millimetres expected across much of the region.

Some areas around Simcoe County could see even higher totals if thunderstorms develop within the system. Forecasters say the wet weather will arrive as a series of low-pressure systems move in, bringing periods of steady rain and occasional heavier downpours.

The areas currently being watched include Barrie, Collingwood and Hillsdale, as well as Newmarket, Georgina and northern York Region. The rainfall also covers Innisfil, New Tecumseth and Angus, along with Bracebridge, Gravenhurst, Huntsville, Baysville, and the Parry Sound area including Rosseau and Killbear Park.

The timing could make things messy.

The ground is already saturated or still frozen in some areas and much of the rain may run off instead of soaking in. Environment Canada says that increases the risk of flash flooding, water pooling on roads, and localized flooding in low-lying areas.

Officials say rainfall warnings could be issued as the system gets closer.
