Police were called to the emergency department at Markdale Hospital after a patient “became aggressive” in an incident witnessed by staff, visitors and other patients. Brightshores Health System says staff were responding to a challenging and unpredictable situation Monday when emergency responders were called to the hospital on Toronto Street South. “This incident was witnessed by patients, families and visitors and we sincerely apologize to those affected by this situation,” the hospital said in a statement. Brightshores says violence, threats and aggressive behaviour toward healthcare workers will not be tolerated, adding staff have the right to a safe workplace. Support is being provided to employees affected by the incident. The health system says it is also conducting a comprehensive review of safe rooms across its facilities to ensure they continue to support staff safety, patient care and emergency response efforts. Brightshores has not released details about what led to the event, citing patient privacy concerns.
