It looks like there may be a brief break from the thick wildfire smoke Friday afternoon, but don’t expect it to last. Environment Canada says an “orange warning” remains in effect, with air quality expected to worsen again this evening and remain “very poor” through the weekend. Smoke from wildfires burning in northwestern Ontario continues to suffocate Barrie and other parts of the region, creating unhealthy conditions for residents. Health officials say everyone is at risk, regardless of their age and overall health. Barrie residents are asked to limit time outside this weekend and postpone or cancel outdoor sports, activities and events whenever possible. Signs and symptoms to look out for Common symptoms of smoke exposure include irritated eyes, nose and throat, headaches and a mild cough. More serious symptoms, such as wheezing, chest pain or a severe cough, require immediate medical attention. The health unit also encourages people to keep windows and doors closed as much as possible to help keep smoke out. If temperatures become dangerously hot, staying cool should be priority. Home furnaces and proper ventilation Using the highest quality furnace filter your ventilation system can handle or a portable air purifier can also help indoor air quality. If you have to be outside this weekend, keep your time outdoors as short as possible. A properly fitted N95 or equivalent respirator can help reduce exposure to fine particles in the smoke, although experts say it does not eliminate the health risks.
