Baby season isn’t over just yet at Procyon Wildlife, and a group of tiny new arrivals is making sure of it. Despite it being October, the Beeton rehabilitation centre’s nurseries remain very busy caring for animals, including several adorable patients that recently arrived. This week, Procyon staff say they welcomed six-week-old orphaned raccoons weighing nearly 500 grams each. “That’s less than an average squirrel,” the team added. Photos shared online show the babies bundled in blankets, much to the delight of social media users. The centre also says it took in several red squirrels, plus a young Eastern Grey squirrel weighing just 95 grams. “Even though it’s October, our nurseries are still full of orphaned babies which are continuing to keep us busy,” Procyon Wildlife staff said over social media Friday. The young animals will require months of care from the centre’s volunteers and will stay at Procyon throughout the winter before they are old enough and ready to be safely released back into the wild. Staff say 95 per cent of the wildlife babies they cared for this spring have now been released. The organization says volunteers are still needed to help care for its tiniest patients through the colder months. “Even over the winter, you’ll still get your baby fix,” staff said. Procyon Wildlife works with surrounding communities to rescue and rehabilitate wild animals, with the goal of safely returning them to their natural habitats.
