This weekend marked the 45th anniversary of Carifest. The festivities took over Cowboys Park throughout the weekend. One of the calypso artists performing this year came all the way from Trinidad and Tobago. Carifest highlights the food and music from the islands of Haiti, Bahamas, Trinidad and Antigua, to name just a few. Organizers say it’s important to celebrate the diversity palate of the Caribbean and share that with Calgarians. “Diversity is so beautiful,” said Carifest volunteer and artist Sabrina Naz Comanescu, a long-time member of Decidedly Jazz Danceworks, who participated in a Carifest cultural dance workshop Thursday at the DJD Dance Centre. “Calgary’s artistic landscape, cultural landscape, is so diverse, and it’s wonderful that we, as the Caribbean community, get to have a part in that mosaic, and so it’s wonderful to be able to come together safely, positively here on the grounds of Cowboy Park,” Comanescu said. In addition to the music and food, local vendors and artisans were there too, sharing their talents with festival goers.
