An investigation is underway after two garages caught fire Sunday afternoon in northwest Calgary. Fire crews attended the scene in the 100 block of 16 Street N.W. around 2 p.m. “Arriving crews saw smoke and heavy flame volume from a distance. They didn’t call a second alarm, but when they arrived, they had two garages that were fully involved,” said Gordon Best, Calgary Fire Department District Chief Number Three. “The flames had carried on to a large spruce tree, which carried it onto the adjacent houses, and the radiant heat was such that it affected the garages across the alley as well.” Best said there were no injuries and the fire was extinguished fairly quickly, to the point where it didn’t spread to any other adjacent houses. Residents stood in front of their houses, away from the fire in the back.
