It was a smoky day in Calgary and much of southern Alberta on Tuesday. Air quality is expected to improve on Canada Day, but there could be a risk of thunderstorms in the afternoon that may impact any planned outdoor activities. On Tuesday, Calgary reached a high of 20 C with sunny but hazy conditions throughout the afternoon. There could be a risk of thunderstorms in the evening hours for Calgary as storm cells ignite over the foothills. Radar so far is showing most of those cells are expected to dissipate as they approach Calgary, likely due to the combination of smoke and city smog. It’s shaping up to be a sunny start to Canada Day for Calgary, but there could still be some lingering smoke hanging over the city. In the afternoon, models are showing a chance of storm development once again with a high of 20 C. This pattern basically repeats itself until Saturday when a ridge of high pressure starts to develop, allowing more sunshine and stability for the first weekend of Stampede.
