A large water main break shut down southbound Macleod Trail on Thursday morning. The break occurred on the side of the road between 109 Avenue and Anderson Road S.E., flooding Macleod Trail. City of Calgary crews were working in the area prior to the break, but the cause remains unknown. According to the city’s website, workers will determine how severe the problem is before using a jackhammer or backhoe to dig up the broken section of pipe. They’ll then figure out the best way to fix it. At this time there is no estimated timeline for repairs. As of 9 a.m., the Anderson LRT Station had no water due to the break. Bearspaw South feeder main replacement update The City of Calgary provided an update on ongoing repair work to the Bearspaw South feeder main on Thursday, saying it is on schedule. The feeder main has suffered two catastrophic breaks since June 2024, both prompting long-lasting water restrictions. City officials decided to construct a six-kilometre-long replacement due to the critical condition of the existing pipe and its importance to Calgary’s drinking system. In an update on Thursday, the city said approximately two kilometres of the new feeder main had been installed across 12 work areas in Bowness, Montgomery and Parkdale, demonstrating “significant progress.” “The first segments of steel pipe arrived on June 18, 2026, and since then crews have been working rapidly to have it installed making significant progress in just one month,” said spokesperson Darren Finney. The replacement pipe will run parallel to the existing feeder main before eventually taking over its role in Calgary’s water-distribution system. The replacement is currently expected to be completed in December 2026.
