The Assembly of Treaty Chiefs (ATOC) of Treaty 6, Treaty 7, and Treaty 8 has unanimously passed a resolution calling for the RCMP and the auditor general to investigate Premier Danielle Smith and members of the United Conservative Party for treason. The vote took place on Tuesday. “We call for this investigation on the basis of the intentional violation of the Treaties; of calling a referendum in the face of severe risks to Canada’s sovereignty and the Treaty Relationship and of failing to take action on the violation of privacy rights of millions of people,” the ATOC said in a news release. “Further, Premier Smith and the UCP government have done all this with significant risks of foreign interference and influence.” Smith addressed the resolution at a news conference on Wednesday. “I think it’s disgraceful. I think it’s disgraceful that any government that wants to be taken seriously would level charges that serious against another government,” she said. “When they were pursuing a new relationship with Ottawa I cheered them along. We are pursuing a new relationship with Ottawa that respects our jurisdiction and I would ask that they be respectful of that. But that language has no place in this democratic discussion.” The RCMP say they are aware of the request but they are not yet prepared to release an official response.
