Here’s how the Alberta government’s $100 payment will work

The Alberta Energy Rebate, announced by Premier Danielle Smith in Calgary Wednesday, will pay $100 to some 3.4 million eligible Albertans starting July 1.

The one-time payment is only available to Albertans over 18 who have filed a tax return and have a household income under $225,000.

A secure online application portal on the Government of Alberta website will open on July 1 and close Sept. 30, 2026. A link has not yet been posted online as of Wednesday.

Each adult will have to apply separately to receive the money.

Albertans 18 and over living at the same address but not considered married or common law, including roommates, adult children or other adult family members, will be considered “separate households” during the application period.

The $100 is not taxable and does not have to be reported to the Canada Revenue Agency.

The UCP government says the rebate, meant to replace a gas tax cut, is more money in everyone’s pocket when given the average fuel consumption of an Albertan at around 2,000 litres of fuel each year.

That amounts to $65 in savings per person in a fiscal quarter with fuel tax relief, a news release Wednesday explained.
