One person is dead after a crane crashed into a northern Alberta river on Tuesday. At 9:10 a.m., emergency crews were notified that the crane had gone over the Wapiti River Bridge on Highway 40 near Range Road 704 just south of Grande Prairie. Police, fire, and search and rescue volunteers responded to the scene. The vehicle is still submerged in the river. RCMP say divers haven’t been able to go into the river to search for the driver, because the current is too strong. Police plan to use sonar technology next week in their search. The cause of the crash is still under investigation. Alberta Occupational Health and Safety confirmed Wednesday the worker had been killed, adding the incident will be investigated by federal occupational health and safety investigators.
