A historic hotel in the town of Jasper has a new owner. Family-owned Decore Hotels has announced it has acquired the century-old Athabasca Hotel. Situated on Patricia Street and Miette Avenue in the heart of Jasper, the Athabasca Hotel opened in 1928 and was the town’s first hotel. It sits across from the railway station and was a staple for travellers making their way through the Rocky Mountains. “The Athabasca Hotel is more than a hotel. It is part of Jasper’s identity,” Karyn Decore, the president and CEO of Decore Hotels, said in a news release. “The opportunity to steward a property with this kind of history and connection to the community is incredibly meaningful for our family and our team. “As Jasper continues its recovery and rebuild, we are proud to invest in the future of a property that has helped welcome generations of travellers to one of Canada’s most recognized mountain destinations.” Decore says her company plans to invest $4.5 million into the property over the next year to upgrade the building, but plans to preserve the existing character. The company has operated in Jasper since 1961, when it acquired the Diamond Motel, later renamed Maligne Lodge. The family expanded the business in 1978 with the purchase of the Tonquin Inn.
