Following the FIFA World Cup Final, some fundraisers are hoping to keep up the momentum and excitement for soccer by hosting what hopes to break the record as the world’s longest soccer game. Chris Scheetz, who last year broke the record for longest ride on a ferris wheel at KDays, organized the event at the Edmonton Expo Centre with the kickoff at 5 p.m. Monday. “Hot off the World Cup and all that excitement, we’ve decided to break the world record, which is now only 60 hours,” said Scheetz. They are hoping they can keep the game running for 72 hours until Thursday evening. Local icons Gene Principe, Janice Irwin and Ashley Callingbull will be participating in the record-setting game as well as Mayor Andrew Knack. Funds raised through the event will go towards Alberta Dreams, a charity that aims to fulfill the dreams of children with severe, chronic or life-threatening medical illnesses. “We’re hoping to do 40 dreams in our 40th year this year,” said Scheetz, adding that last year’s ferris wheel fundraiser saw $70,000 in donations. Local DJ Sean Lamb is also hoping to raise $10,000 for Alberta Dreams at the event by DJing for 24 consecutive hours. “I’ve done yacht parties in Türkiye, Croatia and Greece every summer for the last 15 years,” said Lamb. “If there’s a guy up for this job, it’s definitely me.” Lamb will be DJing from 5 p.m. Monday to 5 p.m. Tuesday.
