Leduc RCMP is taking its investigations to the sky, with the launch of its new Remotely Piloted Aircraft System (RPAS) program. The program will be used in search and rescue operation efforts, collision and crime scene documentation, and disaster response, according to a news release from the detachment. “The use of RPAS technology allows our officers to gather timely and accurate information while reducing risk to both the public and responding personnel,” Insp. Kiel Samotej said. RPAS have already been used in a standoff in Leduc County, a report of a shooting in a field, and to investigate a stolen car found in a farmer’s field. RPAS deployments will be conducted strictly with all applicable legislation, Transport Canada regulations, and RCMP policy, RCMP says, adding “the program is underpinned by a strong commitment to protecting the privacy and rights of the public.” Police say the devices will be deployed in the areas of Leduc, Calmar, and the Edmonton International Airport (YEG). The effectiveness of the program will be assessed on an ongoing basis.
