Alberta’s police watchdog says a man who was fatally shot by police last month had assaulted a woman and threatened to kill her dog. The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) is looking into the June 25 death after police in Cold Lake responded to a domestic call at a residence there. RCMP described it as a domestic violence incident. Police said officers determined there was a person with a firearm and that two others in the home were able to flee to safety. ASIRT says Mounties used a drone to watch the man from a distance while trying to contact him. Crisis negotiators spent several hours trying to get the man to surrender. At one point officers believed the man was attempting to get into a vehicle with a gun to leave the property. Officers attempted to stop him. During the confrontation an officer fired their service weapon and hit the man, who died on scene. ASIRT has been tasked with investigating the actions of the officers. Cold Lake is 235 kilometres northeast of Edmonton near the Saskatchewan border.
