This is already the second-wettest June on record for Edmonton and it looks like there’s more rain coming next weekend. Edmonton received 95 mm of rain this past weekend at the Blatchford station. That brings the monthly total to just over 190 mm. 1914 has the record for most June rain at 217 mm. Is it possible we’ll beat that record before the end of the month? Yes. Yes, it is. But, more on the weekend forecast in a moment. The upper low responsible for all the rain is slowly moving off to the southeast, but we’ll continue to see some showers (and pockets of steadier rain) this morning. The sun should break through the clouds this afternoon and that’ll bring a risk of some scattered thunderstorms to central and north-central Alberta late today. An area of high pressure develops over the province for Tuesday/Wednesday, so we should be fairly sunny and afternoon temperatures will return to the low to mid 20s for a few days. We can’t say there’s a zero percent chance of some pop-up thunderstorms late Wednesday or Thursday... but the risk looks low at this point. That changes on Friday as another deep area of low pressure gets set to develop over central Alberta for the weekend. There’s a very good chance that we’ll get some showers and/or thunderstorms late Friday and then ANOTHER round of steady, heavier rain for Saturday and possibly Sunday. Early signs point to a very similar setup to what we just had this past weekend. It’s too early to start talking about estimated rainfall totals for any given area. But, it could be enough to push Edmonton past 1914 to set the record for the wettest June. Bottom line: Rain moves out today, enjoy some sun and warmer weather for most of the rest of this week. Then, another soggy weekend lies ahead. Here’s the forecast for Edmonton and area: Today - Periods of rain this morning.
