The heaviest, steadiest rain zone is moving out of the Edmonton area this morning. A rainfall warning remains in effect for the city early this morning, but will likely be dropped later this morning. That warning will probably stay in place for southern and western Alberta throughout the day as heavier rain continues over those parts of the province. We’ll be cloudy and cool in the Edmonton region throughout the day Tuesday with a few occasional showers. But, we probably won’t add much to the storm total. Since early Sunday morning, the Blatchford weather station has received approximately 75 mm of rain (up to 6 a.m. today) and the airport has counted 73 mm. Unofficial backyard rain gauge totals from around the city indicate some neighbourhoods received closer to 90 mm. The city had received just over 30 mm of rain through all of April and May up to that point this year. Average rainfall for April/May in Edmonton is 72 mm of rain. So, we got roughly two months of spring rain in just over two days. Official rainfall totals for more rural areas are harder to come by, but radar estimates indicate some parts of eastern Alberta picked up close to 150 mm of rain. Temperatures will hover around 10/11 C throughout today with wind around 15-20 km/yh and occasional gusts in the 30-40 km/h. It won’t be as windy as Monday, but still breezy. The deep area of low pressure that’s produced the cool and wet conditions will push further east and weaken over the next 24 hours. So, we should get some sunny breaks Wednesday afternoon and temperatures climbing into the mid teens. Daytime highs return to average (around 20 C) forThursday-Saturday with a mix of sun and cloud. Showers and thunderstorms are expected to develop in western Alberta on Thursday. Some of those could push through the Edmonton region late in the day Thursday. Beyond that - there’s a high degree of uncertainty with the timing of a new low-pressure system forming in the foothills. The GFS model is more aggressive and has it developing late Friday, which would bring a chance of showers to the Edmonton region late Friday and the possibility for rain Saturday. The GDPS model has that system developing a little later, which would give us a chance of afternoon/late showers Saturday and rain Sunday. So...we’ll have to wait to see how that plays out before having more confidence in the weekend forecast. For now, expect at least a chance of showers (or some steadier rain) for both days of coming weekend.
