The province’s police watchdog is investigating after an officer shot and killed a person with a gun in a small northern Alberta city. The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) is looking into the Thursday death after police in Cold Lake were called to a domestic call at a residence there, RCMP said in a media release. Police said officers determined there was a person with a firearm and that two others in the home were able to flee to safety. According to the release, communication attempts with the gunman were unsuccessful and the RCMP’s emergency response team was called in to help. During an altercation, at least one officer fired a weapon, striking the gunman, who was later declared dead at the scene, the release said. No officers were injured. Cold Lake, population 17,815 in 2025, is 235 kilometres northeast of Edmonton near the Saskatchewan border.
