Members across the local community came together Thursday evening for the Waterloo Regional Police Service’s inaugural Hearts and Heroes Awards Gala. The event, held at Bingemans, helped honour the actions of leaders in the police force as well as community members who made a meaningful difference in the lives of others and contributed to the wellbeing of Waterloo Region. CTV’s Tony Grace was the Master of Ceremonies for the gala. Money raised from the event will directly support the Victim Services of Waterloo Region, who offer assistance to those affected by crime and tragic circumstances. Waterloo Regional Police Chief Mark Crowell spoke to CTV News about several acts that were being honoured on the night and what they meant to the broader community. “...A robbery intervention where officers responded and were able to apprehend a robbery in progress, we also have an incredible story of compassion where one of our officers made a connection with someone who was very vulnerable and in the depths of vulnerability in an encampment and human trafficking, and its stories of how our members connect through bravery but also acts of compassion and great relationships,” Crowell said. Canadian county music artist Paul Brandt gave a performance and was recognized for his efforts to combat, eradicate, and bring awareness human trafficking through the Not in My City initiative he founded.
