Hanover police say a 50-year-old man has been charged with attempted murder after a shooting in the community Tuesday. Police were called shortly before noon Oct. 6 to a residence in the 300 block of 14th Avenue, where a 37-year-old man had been shot. The victim was taken to hospital and remains in stable condition while recovering from his injuries. Police say the victim and the accused, Joel Stephenson, were known to each other and had been involved in a dispute shortly before the shooting. Stephenson was arrested shortly after the incident and faces one count of attempted murder using a firearm and two counts of possession of a firearm or ammunition contrary to a prohibition order. He was remanded into custody following a bail hearing Wednesday and is scheduled to appear in Ontario Court of Justice in Walkerton on Oct. 8. Investigators continue to examine the scene, interview witnesses and collect evidence. Police say several identified witnesses have yet to speak with investigators and are encouraging them to come forward. As with all criminal charges, the allegations have not been proven in court.
