The creation of a new Indigenous healing space in the mental health area of London Health Sciences Centre (LHSC) is being dubbed a step towards ‘ReconciliAction.’ Elder Tracey Whiteye told CTV News London the space is an example of harmony within the hospital setting. Its intent is to offer healing to patients unable to access two other locations on the grounds. The new room features a medicine circle and locally created indigenous art. It is also ventilated to support smudging ceremonies. Elders, a navigator, and the mental health team will work together to ensure patients find solace, Whiteye said. “Joy, peace and happiness. To know that sense of belonging, that they have that space to know they are a precious gift of creation,” said Whiteye. LHSC stated the new space was funded from its existing budget along with grants acquired by Indigenous partners.
