Two teenagers are dead, and a third is in hospital, after a high-speed car crash in Laval, Que., early Wednesday morning. According to Laval police (SPL), patrol officers first noticed and attempted to stop the vehicle at 1:20 a.m. on Ouimet Street in the Pont-Viau district. “It quickly sped off. No chase was initiated,” said Laurent Arsenault, a spokesperson with SPL. “The officers themselves decided and judged that for their search for their safety and the safety of the population, It wasn’t a good idea to pursue this vehicle.” About two kilometres away, the vehicle crashed into the Atlantis gym on Laurentides Boulevard. The male driver and a female passenger, 19, were pronounced dead; a male passenger, 19, was transported to hospital in critical condition. According to police, the vehicle did not have a licence plate and speed was a factor in the collision. Skid marks on the road show the car likely veered off toward the sidewalk, jumped the curb and careened into the gym. The car was split in half, with pieces of wreckage scattered on both sides of the boulevard. “Speed is one of the reasons for deadly collisions,” said Arsenault. “It’s really concerning when you see a big accident like this in the neighbourhood. Maybe if it was at another time in the day, there would have been more injuries or more deaths.” Laurentides Boulevard remains closed between Saint-Martin Boulevard and Richard Street. A security perimeter has been established to allow investigators to analyze the scene.
