Quebec’s independent police watchdog is investigating a police chase that left one person dead near Lévis, Que., early Saturday. Authorities were alerted around 11:21 p.m following reports of a collision and gunshots on the Pierre Laporte Bridge in Quebec. Officers from the Sûreté du Québec reportedly located the individual on Highway 20 and initiated a chase at around 1:25 a.m., attempting to stop the vehicle using spike strips. The individual eventually brought the vehicle to a halt on Route 132 in Lévis and was pronounced dead at the scene inside the vehicle. The person involved in the collision reportedly seriously injured another individual before fleeing the scene in a vehicle. The Sûreté du Québec, along with the Quebec City Police Service and the Lévis Police Service, established a perimeter around the vehicle. Seven Bureau des enquêtes indépendantes (BEI) investigators have been assigned to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident. A parallel criminal investigation into the events has been handed over to the Montreal Police (SPVM).
