Two people from Powassan have been charged with impaired driving following separate investigations conducted by the North Bay Ontario Provincial Police in Powassan over the weekend. The first incident was July 25 at 8:40 p.m., when North Bay OPP responded to a traffic complaint regarding a suspected impaired driver travelling southbound on Highway 11 in Callander. “Officers located the vehicle and conducted a traffic stop on Valley View Drive East in Powassan,” the OPP said in a news release July 28. “While speaking with the driver, officers observed signs of impairment by alcohol. The driver was arrested and issued a demand to provide a breath sample but failed to comply.” A 34-year-old Powassan man has been charged with impaired driving and refusing to comply with a demand. Then on July 26 at 2 p.m., a North Bay OPP officer stopped a slow-moving vehicle on Valley View Drive East. Police made the stop when officers saw “a vehicle travelling approximately 20 km/h below the posted speed limit and obstructing traffic.” “While speaking with the driver, the officer observed signs of impairment by alcohol,” police said. A 46-year-old Powassan man was charged with impaired driving, driving without a licence and not having proof of insurance. Both accused are scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in North Bay on Sept. 1.
