Sault teen charged with pepper spray attack

A 16-year-old in Sault Ste. Marie is accused of showing up uninvited to a gathering and then spraying an adult with pepper spray when they were asked to leave.

The incident took place around 12:30 a.m. on May 17 on Chestnut Street South. A 911 call came in and police and emergency medical services were dispatched to the scene.

Not invited to the gathering

“An investigation revealed the accused youth attended a gathering -- to which they were not invited -- and sprayed an adult victim with bear spray after being asked to leave the property,” police said in a news release May 20.

“Although the accused was familiar to some people at the gathering, the victim and accused are not known to one another. The victim sustained minor physical injuries and was transported to hospital.”

Police arrested the teen around 1:15 a.m. Charges include administering a noxious substance, assault with a weapon, weapons possession and two counts of failing to comply with an undertaking.

The accused was held in custody pending a bail hearing.
