Three people face numerous criminal charges after a violent altercation involving a firearm prompted a shelter-in-place order on Manitoulin Island last week. Members of the UCCM Anishnaabe Police Service, assisted by the service’s canine unit, responded to an occurrence in the community on July 10. Police said the incident involved multiple parties and during a physical confrontation a firearm was produced and pointed at another individual. According to Anishnaabe police, following the initial altercation, one of the people involved fled the area in an off-road vehicle. Shelter-in-place order issued “During the occurrence, a shelter-in-place order was issued for part of M’Chigeeng First Nation,” UCCM police said in a news release. The order remained in effect for several hours and was lifted around 5:30 p.m. Search warrant executed Later that same day, police said officers executed a search warrant at a location within the First Nation community. Police said officers seized a number of items in relation to the incident but did not disclose the nature of the evidence recovered. Three arrested, charges laid As a result of the investigation, three individuals were taken into custody and charged. One Manitoulin Island man faces the most serious set of allegations. He has been charged with three counts of assault, one count of assault with a weapon, one count of pointing a firearm, one count of possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, four counts of uttering threats and two counts of mischief. He was arrested on July 13 and initially held for a bail hearing where he was released with court orders. A woman was taken into custody on the day of the incident and charged with assault and assault with a weapon. She was released on an undertaking.
