A day of fishing turned into a rescue mission after a woman became stuck in the mud at a Kanata pond on Sunday. The Ottawa Fire Services say it received a 911 call at around 3 p.m. reporting a 27-year-old had become trapped in Rebecca Pond inside the South March Highlands Conservation Forest. The caller reported his daughter had been fishing from a plastic culvert when she lost her balance and fell in the pond. “She became stuck waist-deep in the mud and sank deeper each time she attempted to move,” Ottawa firefighters said in a social media post. Firefighters used location data from the caller’s cellphone to pinpoint the woman’s exact location on the trail. Crews then met the father at the entrance of a trail and walked to locate her. “Firefighters confirmed that her left leg was trapped in the mud up to her hip and held tightly by the suction. Firefighters used a pike pole to help stabilize her while carefully digging around her leg to release it,” Ottawa firefighters said. The woman was pulled out of the mud and was back onto the boardwalk about 15 minutes after the 911 call. She was assessed by paramedics but was not injured, firefighters say. “Once back at the fire truck, she was rinsed off using one of our hoses.”
