Former educational assistant convicted of sexual exploitation to receive new trial

A former educational assistant who was found guilty of sexually exploiting two boys will have her appeal allowed – in part.

Stacey Duke was convicted on six charges in 2025 in connection with incidents involving two 17-year-old boys. The charges included sexual exploitation, making sexually explicit material available to a child and luring a child.

At the time of the incidents in 2022, Duke was working as an educational assistant at Vibank Regional School.

Duke’s appeal argued the trial had errors on the issue of whether Duke was in a “position of trust” and authority, which the defence argued may have affected the verdict.

A conviction appeal was allowed for the charges related to the second boy – meaning Duke will receive a new trial.

While Duke’s conviction for the first boy was upheld, she was granted leave to appeal her sentence on those charges.

According to the decision, Duke had been released pending the result of her appeal. Now that convictions on some of her charges have been upheld, she is required to begin serving her sentences.

Duke was originally sentenced to 26 months in prison.
