Permanent ‘Vancouver’ sign will not be up for FIFA World Cup

One year ago, Vancouver councillors approved a permanent and “iconic” sign bearing the city’s name to adorn the downtown waterfront, after a temporary sign proved popular.

When the staff report was approved on May 21, 2025, the stated goal was to have the Vancouver sign installed at 1055 Canada Place by the end of the first quarter of 2026—in time for the city’s seven matches of the FIFA World Cup.

That is no longer the case.

The City of Vancouver confirmed to CTV News on Monday that the sign is still in the design phase, and is now expected to be up by the fall.

Instead, during the World Cup another temporary sign “will be one of the many exciting downtown installations celebrating Vancouver during that time,” a spokesperson wrote.

The city has not yet shared when the sign will go up, where, or what it will look like—but confirmed it will cost about $15,000.

The price tag for the permanent sign is $800,000, with the city paying $300,000 after contributions from tourism and business groups.
