The Regina Thunder won its home opener with a 60-35 win over the Winnipeg Rifles. On Sunday at Leibel Field, Thunder fans filled the bleachers, cheering on players and welcoming them back for the season. “I feel good about [the crowd]. It looks good and I’m glad everybody came,” said defensive lineman Jonathan Kampen. By halftime the Rifles were leading 21-18. “I’m feeling good. It’s a battle right now, but we’re good. We’re feeling strong,” Kampen told CTV News at the half. The Thunder staged a comeback in the third quarter, ending it with a 50-28 lead heading into the fourth. Starting the season on a high note Kampen said players are excited for the upcoming games. “It makes a big difference [when people are here]. We love our home crowd and we really appreciate them coming out,” he said. “… [We just] have to take it one week at a time and just win it. Let’s go.” The Regina Thunder’s next home game will be against the Edmonton Huskies on Aug. 30 at Leibel Field at 1 p.m.
