Saskatchewan NDP MLA Keith Jorgenson was in Yorkton on Monday to call for the provincial government to provide a timeline for the long-awaited new Yorkton hospital, arguing residents have been waiting nearly two decades for the project to move forward. Jorgenson said a new hospital was first promised about 20 years ago and has yet to be built. “It’s been 20 years of broken promises from this government, [which] promised repeatedly to build a new hospital here in Yorkton.” The project has remained a frequent topic of discussion both locally and at the Saskatchewan legislature, with government representatives repeatedly stating the hospital will be constructed. Funding for ongoing planning activities was also included in the most recent provincial budget. However, the NDP say progress has been too slow and is characterizing the situation as a broken promise. “After 20 years of broken promises, it’s time for the government to actually deliver.” Jorgenson was calling on the government to provide more certainty to residents by outlining when construction will begin and when the project is expected to be completed. “We’re calling on them to announce a specific timeline tomorrow in the Throne Speech to start construction and when that facility is going to be finished,” he told media. CTV News has reached out to the government for comment.
