A former leader of Métis Nation-Saskatchewan has died. In a post to social media Tuesday, Métis Nation-Saskatchewan (MN-S) announced the passing of Louis Gardiner over the weekend. Gardiner had served as a provincial treasurer, Northern Region 3 regional representative, and local president for MN-S. “The MN–S government extends its deepest condolences to the family, friends, and loved ones of Louis Gardiner following his passing,” the organization said in the post. Gardiner was a survivor of the Île-à-la-Crosse Residential School, before becoming a respected Métis leader and advocate for Métis rights. MN-S represents the Métis citizens of Saskatchewan. “He was a strong and unwavering voice for survivors throughout his life. As one of the representative plaintiffs on the Île-à-la-Crosse Residential School claim, Louis helped lead an historic effort that culminated last year with Canada and Saskatchewan acknowledging the harms and injustices experienced by survivors,” the MN-S post added. Saskatchewan’s settlement totals $40.2M and includes payments ranging from $50,000 to $235,000 for survivors who experienced serious physical or sexual abuse. “Louis will be remembered for his kindness, integrity, determination and lifelong service to the Métis Nation” the post read. “His contributions helped advance justice for survivors and strengthened our Nation for future generations.
