2 Vancouver outdoor pools opening this weekend

As the weather gets warmer, two outdoors pools are about to open up in Vancouver.

As temperatures warm up, two of Vancouver’s outdoor pools will be opening for the Victoria Day long weekend.

New Brighton and Second Beach pools will open on Saturday, May 16, and people can begin registering for slots on Wednesday.

The city recommends booking online, but 25 per cent of pool space is reserved for drop-ins.

Maple Grove and Hillcrest Outdoor pools will open on Monday, June 15.

Meanwhile, staff are hoping to open the beleaguered Kitsilano Pool by mid-June after maintenance and inspections.

Lifeguards will also begin supervising Vancouver’s beaches on Saturday, after the park board reversed its decision to cut staffing in some locations after public outcry.

The beaches serviced by lifeguards will include Spanish Banks East and West, Jericho, Locarno, Kitsilano, Sunset, English Bay, Second and Third.

Before the city reversed course, Spanish Banks, Third and Sunset beaches were set to be without lifeguards this summer.

Consuming alcohol on certain beaches is also allowed starting this May long weekend, between 11 a.m. and 9 p.m.

Beaches were drinking is permitted include Jericho, Spanish Banks, Locarno, Second, Kitsilano, Trout Lake, and New Brighton.

The park board reminds people to not bring beverages in glass bottles to the beach and to avoid entering the water if intoxicated.

“Visitors are expected to be considerate of others by keeping noise and behaviour appropriate, and by respecting shared public spaces,” a notice reads.
