Authorities are reminding drivers to be careful in waning daylight hours after a child was struck in East Vancouver this week. The seven-year-old girl was crossing the street mid-block near East Pender Street and Victoria Drive around 8:30 a.m. Thursday when she was struck, according to the Vancouver Police Department. The child ran onto the road from between parked vehicles and was hit by a driver going approximately 20 km/h, police said. “This incident is an important reminder for pedestrians to exercise additional caution and for drivers to stay vigilant, especially during darker morning and evening commutes,” said Const. Megan Lui in a statement. “With Halloween approaching and excitement building for trick-or-treating, we encourage families to plan ahead and remind children to use crosswalks, stay visible, and be aware of traffic when out in their neighbourhoods.” The girl was taken to hospital with minor injuries and has since been released. Authorities said the driver stayed at the scene and co-operated with investigators.
