More than seven years after an innocent man was gunned down in a Kamloops hotel, two men have been charged with his murder. Hugh Alexander McIntosh, 58, and Brandon Dale Fiddick, 34, have been jointly charged with second-degree murder in the January 2019 shooting of Rex Gill. Gill was one of two men fatally shot at hotels in the city in the span of approximately 90 minutes on Jan. 23, 2019, Kamloops RCMP said in a news release Saturday. The other man killed that day was Cody Mathieu. Police did not say whether any charges have been laid in connection to Mathieu’s death. CTV News has reached out to Kamloops RCMP for more information on the status of that case. This story will be updated if a response is received. “Investigators believe the two shootings were directly linked,” the release reads. “The investigations were subsequently combined under a major investigation led by the Kamloops RCMP Serious Crime Unit.” Police have previously said they believe the killings were targeted and gang related, but Gill—a Penticton resident—was not known to police. His killing may have been a case of mistaken identity, police said in 2019. In their release Saturday, Mounties confirmed that their investigation concluded Gill “was not known to the accused or associated with any criminal activity.” McIntosh and Fiddick were arrested Saturday and held in custody, police said. Supt. Jeff Pelley, the officer in charge of the Kamloops detachment, described the arrests and charges as “a tremendous accomplishment” by the detachment’s investigative teams. “This horrific event had a profound impact on the victim’s family and our community,” Pelley said, in the release. “This is a testament of the persistence, commitment, investigative skill and unwavering determination of our Serious Crime Unit and those that contributed over the years. Most importantly, there is an opportunity for some resolution to those affected by this tragic event.”
