Police-involved shooting in Surrey, B.C., leaves man with injuries of ‘unknown severity’

A provincial police watchdog is investigating an officer-involved shooting in Surrey, B.C., that left a man hospitalized with unconfirmed injuries Monday evening.

The shooting happened after police were called to Southpark Crescent, near Boundary Drive, where a man was “reportedly attempting to possibly break into” a home around 7:30 p.m., the Independent Investigations Office said in a public bulletin Tuesday.

“Police located the man who was the subject of the call and attempted to detain him,” the watchdog said. “There was then an interaction, and shots were fired by police.”

In a separate statement on the incident, the Surrey Police Service said the man “reportedly confronted” officers on scene prior to the shooting.

Officers and paramedics administered emergency care before the person was taken to hospital for treatment of “injuries of unknown severity,” the department added. Police notified the IIO shortly after the shooting.

No other details have been shared with the public.

Police said they will not be releasing further information while the incident is being investigated by the IIO, which is tasked with reviewing all officer-involved incidents that result in death or serious harm, regardless of whether there’s an allegation of wrongdoing against law enforcement.
